Fire-Damaged Lewis & Clark – Plans to Reopen Soon

Fire-Damaged Lewis & Clark’s Plans to Reopen Soon

Historic St. Charles Restaurant Set to Rise from the Ashes – Lewis & Clark

St. Charles, MO/June 8, 2017 (STLRestaurant.News) Lewis & Clark – Three months is a long time in the restaurant business.  It feels even longer when that time is spent rebuilding after disaster strikes, instead of serving your customers.  It was just about three months ago when disaster struck Lewis & Clark’s Restaurant at 217 South Main Street in St. Charles.  It came in the form of fire in the wee hours of Wednesday, March 9, 2017.  The three-story, historic building (dating to the late 1800s) was saved, but the restaurant suffered extensive damage and was forced to close temporarily.  Now, after three-months of rebuilding, this Main Street mainstay is about to reopen for business.

Lewis & Clark’s first opened along Historic Main Street in the mid 1980s. Dan Badock bought the popular St. Charles restaurant and public house in 2012.  The restaurant was already well known for its classic American fare, including great burgers and white chicken chili.  Badock elevated the cuisine, by adding upscale selections like prime rib, filet mignon, and grilled salmon, while maintaining the restaurant’s comfortable, family-friendly vibe and reasonable prices.  He says it’s important to him that families continue to feel comfortable dining at Lewis & Clark’s.  When customers return, they will find the menu and the hours haven’t changed.  Lewis & Clark’s will be open Sunday – Thursday 11:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Friday – Saturday 11:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

The restaurant’s enormous three-story brick building has alway provided ample dining and event space with big picture windows, and balcony seating that offers nice views of the Missouri River and historic Main Street.  Badock says having to rebuild after the fire gave him and his wife the chance to freshen up the restaurant’s decor, and give it a nice makeover.  “While we were down,” he said, “we were able to do some other really nice renovations.”  That includes a new cedar deck and a fresh new look in the restaurant itself.  Badock says one of the best features of the new design is that even though it’s a large space, they purposely created plenty of cozy nooks.  That gives the place a more intimate, comfortable feel.

Besides daily lunch and dinner service, Lewis & Clark’s has been a popular events venue for decades, and once it reopens, it will continue to be a go-to location for wedding receptions, engagement parties, rehearsal dinners, business meetings, anniversary parties, and other social gatherings.  The restaurant specializes in customized menus for gatherings of 20 or more guests.  Badock says they’re already booking reservations for events in July, August, September, and beyond.  Reservations and party arrangements are being accepted by telephone at (636) 947-3334.

Badock says he expects things to go fairly smoothly when they reopen later this month.  One of the reasons Lewis & Clark’s can get back to business as soon as the physical rebuild is complete, is because they were able to retain most of their staff through the rebuild.  The restaurant and event venue normally employs about 45 people.  Badock says he’s glad he was able to keep most of his staff employed throughout the rebuilding process.  That’s meant less disruption for their lives, and it’ll mean a quicker return to normal once the restaurant doors open again.

Badock says they have set the target date for their reopening as Wednesday, June 21st.  He says he’s really hopeful they will be ready to get back to serving their customers by that date.  But rebuilding an entire three-story restaurant is a daunting task, with many, many moving parts.  So, Badock is advising customers to keep an eye on the restaurant’s FaceBook page for updates, and to watch their progress.  He says he’ll post an announcement there if they have to push back that opening date.  Even with the constructions still underway, it’s nice to know that this little slice of St. Charles will soon be returning to normal.

A Main Street Centerpiece in Historic St. Charles – The Mother-In-Law House Restaurant

ST. CHARLES, MO: (STLRestaurant.News) – Autumn is a special season along Historic Main Street in St. Charles.  The tree-lined cobbled street is known for two things: its ghost stories and its homespun hospitality.  For 35-years the Mother-In-Law House Restaurant has been a Main Street centerpiece offering both good food and haunting tales for hungry diners.

The restaurant was originally built in the French style in 1866 by Captain Krammer for his homesick bride.  He split the building in two, with one side for his family and the other for his mother-in-law.  The captain and his family are long gone, of course, but they may have left something behind.

The building is listed among the most haunted places of St. Charles, with stories of objects mysteriously moving and the sounds of footsteps on empty stairs.  There’s even a story about a couple spooked when their names mysteriously appeared on some Easter eggs they received at the restaurant.  You see, the staff doesn’t write on the eggs they give out.  Many, including a psychic who visited, believe the lonely ghost of Krammer’s mother-in-law still sits by a window waiting for her long-absent family.

The Mother-in-Law House Restaurant has been serving fine food and warm smiles to customers since 1981.  There’s plenty of seating in the inviting dining room with its lovely Victorian decor and white table linens.  While the weather holds, the patio is a lovely place for a fall lunch, with views of Main Street and the Missouri River.

Besides the ghost stories, the restaurant is famous for their salads, which are simple, but flavorful combinations of classic ingredients.  Take their beloved pea salad.  It’s a delicious blend of mayonnaise, sour cream, fresh celery, Spanish peanuts, and frozen petite peas.  You’ll find the recipe for another house favorite—Pink Panther Salad—on their website. (Hint: cherry pie filling, pineapple and whipped topping!)

Some lunchtime favorites include their soup and salads, like the curried chicken salad. It’s hearty chunks of chicken with pineapple, green onions, celery and a subtle, but tasty curry dressing.  The Vegetarian Sandwich is a satisfying combination of grilled portabella mushrooms and diced red peppers with their own special mustard sauce on a grilled hoagie roll.  Their burgers are large, juicy and cooked to order.  They’re served with the Mother-In-Law’s famous crispy fries.

At dinnertime, the menu expands and they lay out the salad bar.  You can have it (including the pea salad and Pink Panther Salad) by itself, in a combo with soup and bread, or as a complimentary accompaniment to your entree.  Start with the bacon-wrapped chestnuts, and then try their well prepared New York Strip or a house specialty like Cod Oscar (served with asparagus and hollandaise sauce) or Chicken Veronique, which is sautéed in a cream sauce with grapes, chives, and mushrooms.  Pair your choice with an ice cold beer or a selection from their ample wine list.

No meal at the Mother-In-Law is complete without dessert!  The restaurant is renowned for its flaky-crusted, scratch-made pies.  Donna’s original, award-winning coconut cream pie is made fresh daily.  Or try the homemade Copper Platter Peach Cobbler, which is served warm with ice cream.

The Mother-In-Law Restaurant is open for lunch Monday – Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.  They’re open for dinner Tuesday – Saturday 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.  Patio seating is available any time the weather permits.
