Historic St. Charles Restaurant Set to Rise from the Ashes – Lewis & Clark

St. Charles, MO/June 8, 2017 (STLRestaurant.News) Lewis & Clark – Three months is a long time in the restaurant business.  It feels even longer when that time is spent rebuilding after disaster strikes, instead of serving your customers.  It was just about three months ago when disaster struck Lewis & Clark’s Restaurant at 217 South Main Street in St. Charles.  It came in the form of fire in the wee hours of Wednesday, March 9, 2017.  The three-story, historic building (dating to the late 1800s) was saved, but the restaurant suffered extensive damage and was forced to close temporarily.  Now, after three-months of rebuilding, this Main Street mainstay is about to reopen for business.

Lewis & Clark’s first opened along Historic Main Street in the mid 1980s. Dan Badock bought the popular St. Charles restaurant and public house in 2012.  The restaurant was already well known for its classic American fare, including great burgers and white chicken chili.  Badock elevated the cuisine, by adding upscale selections like prime rib, filet mignon, and grilled salmon, while maintaining the restaurant’s comfortable, family-friendly vibe and reasonable prices.  He says it’s important to him that families continue to feel comfortable dining at Lewis & Clark’s.  When customers return, they will find the menu and the hours haven’t changed.  Lewis & Clark’s will be open Sunday – Thursday 11:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Friday – Saturday 11:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

The restaurant’s enormous three-story brick building has alway provided ample dining and event space with big picture windows, and balcony seating that offers nice views of the Missouri River and historic Main Street.  Badock says having to rebuild after the fire gave him and his wife the chance to freshen up the restaurant’s decor, and give it a nice makeover.  “While we were down,” he said, “we were able to do some other really nice renovations.”  That includes a new cedar deck and a fresh new look in the restaurant itself.  Badock says one of the best features of the new design is that even though it’s a large space, they purposely created plenty of cozy nooks.  That gives the place a more intimate, comfortable feel.

Besides daily lunch and dinner service, Lewis & Clark’s has been a popular events venue for decades, and once it reopens, it will continue to be a go-to location for wedding receptions, engagement parties, rehearsal dinners, business meetings, anniversary parties, and other social gatherings.  The restaurant specializes in customized menus for gatherings of 20 or more guests.  Badock says they’re already booking reservations for events in July, August, September, and beyond.  Reservations and party arrangements are being accepted by telephone at (636) 947-3334.

Badock says he expects things to go fairly smoothly when they reopen later this month.  One of the reasons Lewis & Clark’s can get back to business as soon as the physical rebuild is complete, is because they were able to retain most of their staff through the rebuild.  The restaurant and event venue normally employs about 45 people.  Badock says he’s glad he was able to keep most of his staff employed throughout the rebuilding process.  That’s meant less disruption for their lives, and it’ll mean a quicker return to normal once the restaurant doors open again.

Badock says they have set the target date for their reopening as Wednesday, June 21st.  He says he’s really hopeful they will be ready to get back to serving their customers by that date.  But rebuilding an entire three-story restaurant is a daunting task, with many, many moving parts.  So, Badock is advising customers to keep an eye on the restaurant’s FaceBook page for updates, and to watch their progress.  He says he’ll post an announcement there if they have to push back that opening date.  Even with the constructions still underway, it’s nice to know that this little slice of St. Charles will soon be returning to normal.
