ST. LOUIS, MO/February 13, 2017 (STLRestaurant.News) Ted Drewes – A popular St. Louis attraction is once again being recognized.

On Monday, Explore St. Louis of the St. Louis Convention and Visitors Commission presented Ted Drewes with a trophy for capturing the World’s Best Ice Cream Title.

In September of 2016, Ted Drewes beat out over a dozen countries for the international title in the second annual SoolNua #worldICECREAMindex, a competition that celebrates the central role that ice cream plays in defining a destination and highlighting its authenticity and originality.

“We’re thrilled to see that it has captured the imagination of destinations as far apart as Vancouver and Istanbul” said Patrick Delaney of SoolNua.

Gilligan added: “This year’s rankings were hotly contested with over 20 DMOs from 13 different countries participating.  It was particularly gratifying to see how creatively the top DMOs and their stores engaged with visitors to secure votes and to build brand profile”.

“With so many great ice cream shops and destinations from around the world participating in this fun (and delicious) competition, it is truly an honor for Ted Drewes, St. Louis and the U.S. to be recognized as the winners of the 2016 #worldICECREAMindex,” said Kitty Ratcliffe, president of Explore St. Louis.

“Ted Drewes is an institution in our city and has been serving up amazing frozen treats for visitors and residents along historic Route 66 for generations.  We want to give a special thank you to all the Ted Drewes’ fans who voted for them and helped secure this very sweet and special recognition.” added Ratcliffe.

With 30,000 votes cast, the longtime south city attraction beat out Koun Gelato in Slovakia for the top spot.  Lake Lounge,Grand Hotel Toplice in Slovenia came in at third place.  A full list of the results is available online at www.http://soolnua.com/icecream/

The iconic ice cream shop is also celebrating it 76th year at the historic Route 66 location.  Ted Drewes, Sr. opened his first frozen custard store in Florida in 1929.  This was followed by the opening of another store in St. Louis on Natural Bridge in 1930.  A year later, Drewes opened a location on South Grand.  Finally, in 1941 the family opened a second south side store on Chippewa, which is the only remaining location today.
