J Greene’s Pub Is Irish Tradition + Family Recipes + Local Sports

St. Louis County’s Authentic Irish Pub is J Greene’s

Warson Woods, MO/February 22, 2017 (STLRestaurant.News) – When you think Irish pub, you might think of beer, and Celtic music, darts and St. Patrick’s Day.  And those are certainly fine images of some of the roles Irish pubs play in the St. Louis community.  But do you think of a chef conceived menu of scratch made food and slow-roasted meats?  How about big screen TVs and online ordering for carryout?  You should, if you’re thinking of J Greene’s Irish Pub at 10017 Manchester Road in Warson Woods.  This is a neighborhood pub in the old tradition.  It’s the kind of place where families gather for a meal, where friends meet to share the events of the day over drinks, and the community comes together to cheer on their favorite teams.  Owners Juliet and Jason Greene wouldn’t have it any other way.

In proper Irish-American tradition, you’ll find their menu includes Fish & Chips (hand-dipped, beer-battered cod and fried curry chips), Corned Beef & Cabbage (sliced from the whole brisket they cooked overnight), as well as Bangers & Mash (which includes their house made pork sausage, and Guinness onions).  You’ll also find their signature dish: John R. Greene’s Beef Tenderloin Medallions (with garlic mashed potatoes and an Irish whiskey mushroom and onion cream sauce).  Even more Irish favorites are coming to the J. Greene menu starting March 1st, including braised lamb shank!  Since this is a terrific sports bar too, their menu also includes all the sandwiches, pizza, and apps you’d expect—including J Greene’s awesome take on that St. Louis favorite, toasted ravioli—giant, handmade, golden brown, and delicious!  Want something sweet?  This is an Irish Pub, so try the Chocolate Guinness Cake: it’s moist chocolate cake made with Guinness stout, and topped with Bailey’s whipped cream and Jameson anglaise.  Erin go braugh!

At J Greene’s, any day is a good day to celebrate your Irish, but St. Patrick’s Day is their favorite day of the year!  So they’ve planned some special events to celebrate:

Saturday, March 11th, skip the downtown crowds after the parade and head to J Greene’s for authentic Irish food and drinks!
Tuesday, March 14th, the Kräftig team visit J Greene’s for trivia night starting at 8:00 p.m.  There will be free samples and giveaways, including some excellent Blues Hockey tickets in section 124!

Thursday, March 16th, the Jameson team will be along to help you get an early start on your St. Patrick’s Day festivities!  Join them from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for free samples and great giveaways!

Friday, March 17th, celebrate St Patrick’s Day at one of the most authentic Irish Pubs in St. Louis County!  J Greene’s Irish Pub is pulling out the stops for a day filled with grown-up fun!  There will be visits from the Guinness team, the girls from Tullamore Dew, and Bushmills will feature their newest Irish whiskey, Red Bush!  It’s a day of free samples, giveaways, and authentic Irish food and drinks!

J Greene’s opens at 11:00 a.m. each day. Sunday – Tuesday they’re open until 11:00 p.m., Wednesday – Thursday until midnight, and Friday – Saturday, until 1:00 am.  Since J Greene’s Pub is all about celebrating the season, you won’t want to miss their Mardi Gras Crawfish Boil!  This Friday – Sunday, February 24 – 26, they’re offering an authentic Louisiana craw-fish boil and other Cajun specials to celebrate Mardi Gras.  A ligean ar an dea-uair rolla! (Let the good times roll…Irish style!)

Irish Eyes are Crying – Dandy Inn scheduled to close

Dandy Inn

The Closing Chapter for Dandy Inn

FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, IL/January 4, 2017 (STLRestaurant.News) For the last 40 years, the Dandy Inn, a Fairview Heights mainstay has been the family friendly restaurant and bar of choice for both locals and far away visitors.  Originally built as Becherer’s Tavern in 1850, the building has served as a general store, a tavern, a dance hall and always, a very popular meeting place. And since 1977, it has been the lifeblood for the Daniels family.

On April Fool’s Day of that year, Dave and Phyllis Daniels, officially opened as the Dandy Inn and throughout the years it has been passed down through the family.  Today, you can find their son Mark working from morning to night and his son, Casey, doing his part in the kitchen after school.  Phyllis is now retired and Dave was very fittingly laid to rest on St. Patrick’s Day, 1998.

There have been many changes in the Dandy Inn throughout the years, but one thing that’s remained the same is that there is always something for everyone.  It’s continued to be a great gathering place for families, a restaurant with delicious home-style meals, and a cozy pub to grab a cold one after work.  That’s why the news of its closing has left so many sad.

The family friendly restaurant and bar, best known for their wings, fish dinners, and for hosting their weekly car shows, will close its doors for the final time on Sunday, January 15.  The family recently announced that with a heavy heart they will be moving on to new adventures.

But they are thankful for their incredible journey, which has allowed them to see a generation of young men and woman who first came in as young children now bring in their own kids!  And for the many customers and friends who have frequented the traditional Irish pub along the way, it’s been an extremely dandy ride.

A Legend in Its Own Time – Nicks Pub

Nicks Pub, St. Louis, MO

Nicks Pub: Where Everybody Knows Your Name

St. Louis, MO/December 20, 2016 (STLRestaurant.News) Nicks Pub – Terrific neighborhood bars are not an obsolete idea…they are timeless.  These bars are the sacred little places where you go once or perhaps a few times a week to see your friends, shoot the bull with the bartender, watch your favorite sports team or play some games.

What makes the great ones great?  It’s what’s on the walls, the selection of spirits offered, how customers are greeted and treated, and of course, the music that’s played.  But then there’s also that philosophical quality that’s toughest to capture and impossible to fabricate; the spirit of the place.  It’s either there or it’s not…and Nicks Irish Pub just happens to have it.

Nick Pub, St. Louis, MO - 101 Draft Beers

Nick Pub, St. Louis, MO – 101 Draft Beers

Following in the footsteps of a rich history of successful bars over past generations at 6001 Manchester, in 1996, Nicks Pub came to life.  Sometimes referred to as the crown jewel of Dogtown’s south side…it’s definitely been a Maplewood mainstay ever since.  Forget about all those uppity specialty beer bars, or swanky places with expensive drinks made with cheap ingredients, the inexperienced bartenders and worst of all, those places that never seem to have enough space at the bar.

There’s a science to creating a great bar…they offer something uniquely of their own.  I think the secret to Nicks might simply be a combination of things…high end pub food, amazingly reasonable prices, an extensive list of beers, outstanding cocktails, great bands, bartenders who remember your name and most importantly, that comfortable, no frills atmosphere.  It’s quite possibly the “Cheers” bar of Maplewood… maybe a little bit rowdier on late nights, but the perfect neighborhood bar.  It’s like one big family.  If Sam, Woody, Norm, Cliff were in town, they’d probably have regular seats at the bar every day.

It’s literally a beer lover’s haven!  Where else are you going to find something like 101 beers on tap?  The selections read like a book, the content of which includes a guide to the various types of beer, recommendations of food pairings including things you can get there, and categories to help you find the type of beer you want.

On the full menu you’ll find traditional Irish pub food like fish and chips and Shepard’s pie.  Their burgers are amazing; the pasta is yummy and if you’re a Wing fan…look out!  They offer 3 different styles of preparing their famous chicken wings; Traditional Fried, Hand-Breaded and from The Pit with 24 different sauces to choose from.

If you’re looking for extravagant you’re probably going to be disappointed, but Nick’s undeniably nails down the cozy atmosphere of the quaint public house.  And, there’s more than enough room to move around.  If you get tired of the flat-screens in the main bar, just head upstairs to play a game of pool, throw a few darts, and test your luck at a vintage arcade game.  If that’s not enough, you can always try to find a seat at the always-crowded shuffleboard table or if you simply want to just chill out and chat with a friend, there’s a nice covered patio/beer garden addition.

Nicks Irish Pub has been given accolades more than once by Riverfront Times and other publications for the Happy Hour specials, the most outstanding vodka selection, best wings, best sports bar, best place to play pool.  You name it…they’ve been recognized for it.  They also host all types of top notch private parties…Birthday Parties, Holiday Parties, Ugly Sweater Parties, Graduation Parties, Engagement Parties, Shower Parties, and Celebration of Life Parties.

Whether you’re looking for a cozy sports bar this winter, partaking in a celebration with friends, grabbing a quick drink or catching a great sporting event…Stop by Nicks; WHERE EVERYBODY KNOWS YOUR NAME:)
