Scarecrow Restaurant May Be Chesterfield’s Best Kept Secret

Scarecrow Restaurant May Be Chesterfield’s Best Kept Secret

Robust Whiskey & Wine Programs at Scarecrow in Chesterfield

Chesterfield, MO/April 19, 2017 (STLRestaurant.News) – Change is inevitable in the ebb and flow of St. Louis’ restaurant industry.  Sometimes change comes quickly, with restaurants closing suddenly and others popping up overnight to take their places.  Sometimes, the changes are more subtle, transforming a neighborhood place into something new over the course of months, even years.  The launch of Chesterfield’s Scarecrow Restaurant at 1095 Chesterfield Pkwy East was more like the latter.

Chris Mertz and Shawn Mulholland opened Scarecrow in January 2013 in footprint of the former Press Box Bar & Grill, but they didn’t change everything all at once.  They tapped Chef Michelle Parker to take what was essentially a bar and grill menu and elevate it to a menu of “creative American cuisine” with a much greater focus on creating fresh, scratch-made dishes.  Consequently, the Scarecrow menu has evolved over the last four years.  Diners will still find a nice selection of “starters,” including bar and grill staples like calamari, potato skins and wings.  But they’ll also fine thoughtful creations like the cheese and sausage board, baked brie, and Buffalo cauliflower.  They’ve also added fresh-built salads that go beyond the typical Caesar or chopped iceberg side salad, and vegetarian options like seasonal vegetable risotto and pizza Margherita.  They kept the best of the burger menu, but expanded the entree selection to include new favorites like blackened salmon, pan-seared walleye, and beef tenderloin in a brandy peppercorn sauce.  These can be paired with baked potato, mac-n-cheese, or thoughtful sides like Brussels sprouts and Parmesan flash-fried spinach.  Lunch customers will find apps, soups, salads, burgers, pizza, and specialty sandwiches like Caprese grilled cheese, melty pressed Cubans, and hot pastrami.

Mertz and Mulholland have also developed a fairly robust wine program in a relatively short amount of time.  They began with about 45 labels, with ten available by the glass—five whites and five reds.  They’ve expanded the wine program to include more than 80 bottles from some of the best winemaking regions of the world.  Their wine room includes selections from Italy, France, Germany, Australia, Argentina, as well as domestics from California, Washington, Oregon, and Missouri.  Prices range from $27/bottle (Missouri’s Noboleis 2010 Chambourcin and 2011 Baril de Blanc), to $120/bottle (Italy’s 2009 Antinori ‘Tignanello’ Super Tuscan), with a large selection in the $30-50/bottle range. Wine by the glass includes a rotating selection of red and whites for $7-10/glass.

Scarecrow also offers 14 beers on tap, including mass market labels (Bud Light, Bud Select, Stella Artois), craft beers from Civil Life, Boulevard, Goose Island, Kirkwood Station, and Schlafly), and Irish imports (Guinness and Smithwick’s).  They also offer domestic bottles (the A-B line), imported bottles from Mexico, Ireland, Holland, Belgium, and Italy, as well as American and Irish hard ciders.

Scarecrow’s whiskey selection may be among the best in the region.  They offer more than 200 whiskeys from the very best whiskey distilleries worldwide.  There are American whiskeys of every kind—Tennessee, Wheat, Corn, White, etc.—including blends and single malts.  There’s a nice selection of American ryes and a huge selection of American bourbon whiskey.  Scarecrow also offers a variety of Canadian whiskeys, Irish whiskey, blended Scotch whiskey, and a well-curated selection of single malt scotches, plus brandy & Cognac, port wine, and spirited liqueurs.

Scarecrow is open Monday – Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to midnight and Friday – Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. Happy Hour is Monday – Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  And they’re now available for private parties.  When Mertz and Mulholland first opened Scarecrow, they said their intent was to create for the Chesterfield area the kind of place they would want to visit.  Customers rave about the warm pretzels, bacon-wrapped pickles, the wine program, and the incredible whiskey selection.  There’s also a very nice patio to enjoy apps and drinks al fresco, or a meal with friends and family.

CHESTERFIELD, MO/March 24, 2017 (STLRestaurant.News) Crushed Red is scheduled to open its new company owned location in Chesterfield, MO in a few days.  More details will soon follow.

Crushed Red’s new Chesterfield location was previously home to Kreiger’s Sports Bar & Grill for 25 years.  Krieger’s was forced to close when the landlord refused to renew their lease.  Kreiger’s (Chesterfield) are referring their previous customer to the Krieger’s Hometown Sports Bar & Grill located at 1356 Big Bend Rd, Ballwin, MO 63021.  The Ballwin location is owned by Dave McDonald, who purchased the establishment approximately 18 months ago.

Crushed Red and its employees are working hard to properly prepare for a successful opening.  While visiting the new location everybody was busy paying close attention to every detail.  It is a beautiful facility with a completely new atmosphere that complements their mission that is stated on their company website.  Their slogan is “Artfully Chopped Craft Salads™”.

Crushed Red has 5 Missouri locations, 2 Colorado locations, 1 Illinois location and 1 Kansas location with more opening soon according to veteran restaurateur, Chris LaRocca, whom I visited briefly with when I stopped by to take pictures.   In addition to their new Chesterfield location their four other Missouri locations are in Clayton, Columbia, Creve Coeur, and Kirkwood.

While we have not written about this restaurant establishment previously you can count on reading more here.  After talking with LaRocca he agreed to provide us with some additional information that we will soon be publishing.  They have some great ideas that diners are obviously ranking high and visiting regularly.  Their food is clean, organic, fairly priced and in great locations with great atmosphere’s.  What else can a diner ask for?

Kiss Stars are Rocking It in St. Louis at Rock and Brews

Kiss Stars

Grand Opening of Chesterfield Rock and Brews with Kiss Stars

CHESTERFIELD, MO/January 11, 2017 (STLRestaurant.News) Kiss Stars – Okay, I just had an extremely fun interview with Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley of Kiss at the Grand Opening of their Rock and Brew restaurant in Chesterfield.  I was so very surprised and happy that we had such access to them and they couldn’t have been nicer.

I was also very pleased to find out that they’re not just the branding behind the restaurant but are actually owners and have been majorly involved from the planning of the beginning concept to what’s on the menu and everything in between.

There are several things that set Rock and Brew apart from other restaurants.  They serve the highest quality American comfort food by using five star chefs.  They even like to hire general managers and kitchen managers with culinary backgrounds.

They are also an extremely kid friendly and pet friendly restaurant.  They have a special menu for the Lil Rockers of tomorrow and a kids area where they can play.  And yes, they also have a special pet menu especially for Fido with lean, low salt meat…and an occasional mutt brew.

They have an immense multi-selection of craft beers, rock and roll music piped through the restaurant speakers and a huge outdoor beer garden with an open pit gas fire for all year round.

You won’t see any old rock and roll costumes in the place…the guys say they did not want it to be a rock and roll graveyard but a celebration of past, present and future rock and roll.

I was thoroughly impressed that most of what they wanted to talk about was their commitment to Wounded Warriors. Every Grand Opening is a special day for the veterans who have served our country so honorably. They also are big on ordering food products locally and also on helping out schools and organizations in the community.

The amazing friendship the two have goes all the way back to the 70’s when they started their first band together, and years later they are still together creating ways to entertain the masses. There are currently two corporate owned Rock and Brews and seventeen franchises with another one planned to open soon. One things for sure, these guys are nowhere close to stopping now.

Tomorrow: At Rock and Brews with Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley

Rock and Brews Grand Opening Tomorrow, January 11th featuring Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley

CHESTERFIELD, MO/January 10, 2017 (STLRestaurant.News) Tomorrow is the scheduled Grand Opening for Rock and Brews featuring rock n roll stars, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley.  We are scheduled to interview them at 9:15 am.  We will post our article as-soon-as-possible after the interview, hopefully with video.

Rock and Brews, Chesterfield, MO

Rock and Brews, Chesterfield, MO

Rock and Brews is described by the company as “energized dining and entertainment concept offering affordable, high quality American comfort food and a broad selection of international and craft brews, while immersing guests in a family-friendly rock ‘n’ roll experience unlike any other. Where the unifying force of rock ‘n’ roll meets the burgeoning craft beer culture, Rock & Brews is born”.

We have ate at Rock and Brews on several occasions and the food is exceptional, unlike some of the other theme restaurants concepts of the past.  It appears to us that they are taking some serious ownership in this concept as illustrated by visiting the company’s website.  They are actively promoting the restaurant and they certainly appear to know what is going on.

According to their website tickets are necessary for tomorrows event.  Visit their website event page specific to this event for more details

Kara Savio, our lead journalist will be conducting the interview.  Stay tuned for some great entertainment!  We wrote several articles prior to their opening and will continue to follow them.  Great concept that consumers are loving.  Great beer, great food at a reasonable price while surrounding visitors with something they all appear to love; music.

The Legend Continues – Charlie Gitto Jr.

Charlie Gitto Jr.

Charlie Gitto Jr. Going Strong 36 years Later

St. Louis, MO – (STLRestaurant.News) Charlie Gitto Jr. – He may have one of the most recognizable names and faces in St. Louis…and that’s not surprising since Charlie Gitto Jr. is the owner of the most beloved Italian restaurants in St. Louis that has been serving satisfied customers for a respectable 36 + years!  He was recently interviewed by St. Louis Magazine and shared a few of his amazing stories.

From the time he was 8 years old, Charlie knew what he wanted and has spent his life pursuing his dream.  It all began after school foil-wrapping russet potatoes at the place he now owns on The Hill, where his father was maitre d’.  At age 25, when it went up for sale he made it his own calling it “Charlie Gitto’s on The Hill”.

Charlie Gitto Jr.

Charlie Gitto Jr.

Was it always easy?  According to Charlie, it definitely was not.  A snowstorm in ’82, double-digit inflation, a 130 degrees -no air conditioned kitchen, and antiquated equipment made it challenging.  There were a few more challenges in those early days, like a wedding reception in a rain storm that left the tent leaking, the Dom Perignon fountain full of water, and the wedding cake melting.  But those only made Charlie hunker down and work that much harder.  After all, to Charlie, failure was not an option.

Through the years there have been many changes, both to the structure and to customers dining tastes.  Where part of the building now sits, there was once a tomato garden where customers could choose and hand-pick a tomato and watch their salad be made table-side.  The unique Italian Chopped Salad with its phenomenal in-house made dressing is still a favorite to this day.  They’ve also made expansions over the years, first a complete kitchen renovation, then adding three rooms divided by pocket doors then undertaking a major interior remodel a few years ago.

When they first opened it was not unusual for lunch goers to partake of an alcoholic beverage or two.  Whether it was a signature Gibtini , or simply, a Manhattan, 30, 40, 50 of those drinks were sold at lunch time each day.  That changed drastically in the late 80’s when the new drink of choice became tea.  The wine list at Charlie Gitto’s has also evolved throughout the years.  When he first took over, the list included Blue Nun, Lambrusco, Lancers, Matues and a few Chiantis, they have expanded to extensive Italian and California selections with mix of other varietals, to satisfy today’s more educated customer.
They now also have their own bakery on site where they bake their ancient grain and signature Italian bread, fresh hand-made pastas, desserts, and pizza dough.  They also prepare the sauces and condiments in an old-world recipe style that are sold in all their other restaurants.  All desserts, are homemade like their decadent tiramisu, and their delicious chocolate, red velvet, Italian cream cakes and Italian cookies.

Because of overwhelming success with his landmark fine Italian dining restaurant on The Hill, and due to popular demand, in 2004, Charlie launched a second location at Hollywood Casino in Maryland Heights, Mo.  Most recently, he introduced his renowned Italian fare to his hometown of Chesterfield, Mo.

From his signature toasted ravioli to his bestselling Pasta Suzanne, Charlie has his hand on the pulse of it all.  He’s proud to say that this is not just a business, but a family labor of love.  Two of his four children already help run the company.

His son, Anthony, and daughter, Suzanne, are both in management positions.  Their mother, who Anthony calls the “unsung hero,” is also involved in the business, helping with decorating and making sure things are running smoothly at all three locations.

The ultimate goal is to one day turn the business over to his children and have them carry on the family dynasty that he has so devotedly created.  But for now, don’t expect Charlie Jr. to be going anywhere, anytime soon!

Fine Dining for Lunch is a Special Treat – EdgeWild Restaurant and Winery

Chesterfield, MO: (STLRestaurant.News) – Eating a meal at a fabulous restaurant is always a treat.  An imaginative menu of expertly prepared food served flawlessly in a well-appointed dining room can really make for a special evening.  But lavish dinners can take a big bite out of your budget.  During the holiday shopping season that’s especially true, unless you treat yourself to lunch instead.  Some of the best fine dining establishments around St. Louis also do an amazing lunch!  And holiday shoppers heading for Chesterfield Mall can give themselves the gift of lunch at EdgeWild Restaurant and Winery at 550 Chesterfield Center just north of the mall.

EdgeWild’s menu offers “inventive American cuisine” under the direction of Executive Chef Aaron Baggett.  The restaurant strives to source many ingredients locally and as such, the menus include seasonal offerings.  Their soup selection is a good example.  Right now, they’re featuring a selection of “Late Harvest” soups.  These include the Forest Mushroom and Brie, made with shiitake, Portobello, and oyster mushrooms blended in a rich cream, then finished with French brie; the Five Onion soup, a delicious combination of caramelized Vidalia, red, and yellow onions, with shallots and leeks in a deep, rich beef broth, with a gratinéed gouda crust; and the warm-you-from-the-inside-out Moscato Smoked Crab Chowder with smoked crab and fire-roasted corn in a charred tomato cream.

Although the dinner menu is more extensive, you’ll find some of the most popular elements are available for lunch too.  That includes their popular Chardonnay Chicken entree.  It’s the same chardonnay-marinated breast, grilled and served with Dijon cream, asparagus, and garlic mashed potatoes, just in a smaller, more lunch-friendly portion and price.  At lunchtime, the entree costs 20 to 50-percent less.  Also on the menu for lunch are EdgeWild’s full selection of salads and structured sandwiches, as well as a slimmed down selection of flatbreads, like the Pesto Chicken Flat (roasted chicken, pesto oil, sweet red peppers, mozzarella, and provolone).  It’s available in a lunch combo with salad. Even at lunch, Chef Baggett has paired each item with a suggested wine chosen to complement it.

Of course, EdgeWild is a fabulous place for dinner too.  They were voted #10 in USA Today’s “Best Winery Restaurant” in America Reader’s Choice 2016.  They also have a nationally recognized gluten-free menu, which includes some of their most popular sandwiches made on Udi’s gluten free rolls!

EdgeWild Restaurant and Winery offers two separate wine menus.  There’s the glass and bottle list which includes more than 30 selections, including local wines and some aged on the premises and bottled under the EdgeWild label.  The list covers a variety of price points.   The Cellar list includes a wide range of domestic and international fine wines from select high-end winemakers.  You’ll find the best of Augusta, Missouri, Sonoma and Napa Valleys in California, and Oregon wine country, as well as wines from France, Italy, Argentina, and New Zealand.

EdgeWild Restaurant and Winery is a full service, fine dining experience whether you go for dinner, or treat yourself to lunch!  They’re open Monday – Thursday: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday – Saturday: 11 a.m. to midnight, and Sunday: noon to 9 p.m. with Happy Hours Mondays – Fridays from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.  Wine Club members enjoy special discounts and benefits, including a bottle of wine each month.  But you don’t have to be a member of the club to enjoy the Wine Down Wednesday discounts!  Dine at the restaurant any time on Wednesdays (including lunchtime) and bottled wine, up to $99, is half price! It might be the perfect respite amid a day of holiday shopping!

For something a little more casual, check out EdgeWild Bistro & Tap, 12316 Olive Blvd. in Creve Coeur, MO 63141.  EdgeWild owners Andy and Dee Dee Kohn opened the casual restaurant in the footprint of their shuttered BBQ joint Wild Smoke.  They tapped EdgeWild Executive Chef Aaron Baggett to set the bistro’s menu too.  Here Chef Baggett went with a more casual American fare, including an assortment of pizzas, burgers, fish tacos and homemade potato chips.  Whereas EdgeWild Restaurant and Winery focuses on wine, EdgeWild Bistro & Tap offers 75 different beers in draft, bottles, or cans.   There’s a beer club too, with special discounts, complimentary tastings and other perks.  The bistro’s kitchen is open Monday – Thursday: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday – Saturday: 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and Sunday: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Gift cards are available for both restaurants.
