A Neighborhood Favorite in Tony’s Donuts
MARYLAND HEIGHTS, MO/January 5, 2017 (STLRestaurant.News) For the last year I kept hearing from all my co-workers that there was a delightful little shop not far from work on McKelvey Road that has the most amazing donuts in St. Louis. I had never checked it out until I wanted a terrific cup of coffee the other day and they told me the coffee there was also incredibly good!
After visiting Tony’s Donuts, I’m a total believer and huge fan! Tony’s is a family affair for owners and patrons alike and has been a Maryland Heights neighborhood favorite for the past 21 years. From the moment I walked through the door, I knew exactly what my coworkers were talking about. My immediate impression was that this is a labor of love for someone who works hard and takes pride in the result.
Chilean born, George Badra, is the mastermind behind Tony’s, named after his son who now manages their newest Hazelwood location. His wife Kathy and daughter Kathleen also work a long side him in the family business. Back in his college days he worked part time in a bakery and enjoyed it. He went on to get a business degree but was laid off from his job at 23 years old. His experience and love for working at the bakery lead him to enroll in pastry school.
In May of 1995, Tony’s Donuts first opened their doors in their current location in Maryland Heights and they’ve been a popular neighborhood staple ever since. Several things set the shop apart from its competitors. First and most importantly, they think of themselves as more of a Café because unlike most traditional donut shops they also sell breakfast and lunch sandwiches, real fruit smoothies, all kinds of coffee and much more.
Another important difference is that unlike most donut shops, Tony’s donuts are not deep fried. George wouldn’t divulge his family secrets, but says they’re made in their own special way with love and care. The shop is also known for serving a unique cream cheese filling, very much like the French use in their pastries.
Last but not least, or certainly not in my book, is the fact that they also brew an exceptional cup of coffee. George will only use 100% Arabica Whole Bean Coffee. Why is this so important? He explains that the beans are grown on a hill or in an area with plenty of direct sunlight, which makes them blossom more and hold their flavor better.
The place itself is super cute and has a real mom and pop feel. In an area that’s heavily dominated by big chain stores, it’s refreshing see a small business like Tony’s Donuts doing great things. Upon entering the shop you immediately smell the fantastic aroma of delicious baked goods.
You name it and the bakery cases are filled with it. Tray after tray is lined with an exceptionally large variety of decadent treats, one looking more appetizing than the next. They offer Glazed Raised Donuts, Carmel Long Johns, Chocolate Glazed Croissants, Cinnamon Rolls, Custard and Cream Cheese Filled treats, just to name a few.
If you love Cake Donuts, there’s a multitude of unforgettable flavors like Cinnamon, Oreo, Butterfinger, Blueberry Cake, and many more. You’ll find Muffins made of Banana Nut, Blueberry, Double Chocolate, Apple Cranberry and melt-in-your-mouth Pastries such as Apple Bear Claws, Cream Horns, Cream Cheese Danish, and Lemon Pastries.
Bagels lovers won’t be disappointed. There are plenty of freshly baked flavors like Cheddar Cheese, Blueberry, French Toast, Asiago Cheese and French Toast. And if you need a cake for entertaining, you just need to ask. Some of their specialties are Cheese Cake, Lemon Mascarpone Cake, Red Velvet Cake and Tiramisu.
And keep in mind, besides all the yummy sweet treats, they also make appetizing looking breakfast sandwiches like Ham Egg & Cheese, Steak Egg & Cheese, Gyro Egg & Cheese, Turkey Bacon Egg & Cheese and more. You can even get a made to order Bacon/Ham/Sausage Croissant.
There are a number of lunch choices as well, like Gyro and Brisket Sandwich’s, Tony’s Grilled BBQ Chicken, Roast Beef & Cheese, a BLT Deluxe, and Tuna or Chicken Salad– all on freshly baked Croissants Bagels, Hoagie Rolls, Biscuits, Texas Toast or Wraps.
And to go with either meal, you have options of Regular or Iced Coffee, flavored Hazelnut, French Vanilla, and Mocha Coffee, a Caramel Macchiato, Hot or Frozen Cappuccino, Espresso, Lattes, Hot Chocolate, Hot Tea, Juices, Milk, Soft Drinks, and Real Fruit Smoothies.
The McKelvey location that I visited is tucked away in a little strip mall not too far from the I-270/I-70 intersection. On weekend mornings I’m told it gets really crazy, but I’m sure it is totally worth the wait! The melt-in-your-mouth Chocolate Covered Croissant that my co-workers had talked so much about was sold out the day I was in, which gives me an excellent excuse to go back for another visit. I’d say, any day you have Tony’s is a good day!
