Stovall’s Grove – A Country Western Honky Tonk
WILDWOOD, MO: (STLRestaurant.News) The bar dates back to 1935, but was rebuilt in 1958. Since its opening, it has been known as the place to go to listen to country music as well as to dance. It was owned by the Stovall family for approximately 70 years. Dennis and Liz Elze bought the Stovall’s Grove in 2006 for their love of music.
After years of operation the place had began showing signs of aging. However, the Elze’s have upgraded and brought the place back up into shape without damaging the historic ambiance of this popular music venue. Today, many years later, Stovall’s Grove is still popular as a bar, honky tonk, dance hall and event venue. When we stopped in to visit with Dennis and Liz on Saturday, October 08, they were catering an event using Candicci’s Restaurant and Bar, Ballwin, MO to feed 100 guests. The BBQ was excellent, crowd was happy, and the place was hopping with lots of smiles.
From the bronze sign placed in front of the facility, it explains that in the mid-1900’s, when the road carried more traffic, there were two general stores, one operated by the Hencken Brother, and the other by Henry Poertner, a shoemaker, a harness maker, two blacksmiths, one operated by Joseph Tieman and a carpenter shop.
Today, decades later, the road is less traveled as traffic was diverted to using Interstates. Much of the area has been growing as more residents moving westward towards private communities in the area. Still to this day, Stovall’s Grove is known for live music and dancing, in addition to being a popular event venue.
Live music shows are Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights with doors opening at 6:00 pm and live music starting at 8:30 pm. They are also open Thursday and one Sunday each month with BBQ served. They do appreciate it when their customer wear country attire adding to their country honky tonk atmosphere.
