JAMES BEARD AWARDS

Chicago, IL – STLRestaurant.News Bachelor Farmer in Minneapolis’ Paul Berglund won “Best Chef: Midwest” at the James Beard Foundation’s annual awards this past Monday in Chicago, denying St. Louis its second James Beard Award-winning chef in two years. Two of the five nominees for this year’s “Best Chef: Midwest” award, Kevin Nashan of Sidney Street Cafe and Kevin Willmann of Farmhaus, were from St. Louis and brought their A-game to the awards proceedings. Preparing a roasted pork for presentation, Willmann wasn’t quite able to catch Berglund in the end.

Also in the running were Justin Carlisle of Ardent in Milwaukee and Lenny Russo of Heartland Restaurant & Farm Direct Market in St. Paul, Minn.

Berglund is a native of St. Louis, and launched his culinary career while attending school in California.

This was Willmann’s first time as a nominee for “Best Chef: Midwest.” Nashan was a finalist for the award back in 2014. Both chefs have ranked as semifinalists during the awards proceedings multiple times.

The award ceremony took place at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
