New Grove Bakeshop Putting on the Ritz
St. Louis, MO/September 6, 2017 (STLRestaurant.News) – Everything that glitters is cake, or candy. At least, that’s the case at Sweetfixx, a glitzy new bake shop in The Grove neighborhood. Katina Mims opened her sleek dessert boutique at 4420 Manchester Avenue in July. The shop offers elaborately decorated cake pops, cupcakes, candied apples, and candy-coated Oreos daily—along with fresh cookies, brownies, chocolate covered pretzels, and hand-decorated chocolate strawberries (when in season). Mims also makes elegant, festive cakes for all occasions.
A self-taught baker, Mims had been operating out of her home for about four years before opening Sweetfixx. She says business has been so good, she needed to open the shop to have enough space to keep up with demand. All the goodies are made in small batches in order to assure top quality. Consequently, Mims says some customer favorites, like her red velvet cupcakes and her carrot cake cupcakes sell out frequently. So, if you want something specific, you need to come early, because once something sells out, it’s gone for the day.
Mims has said she knows how fortunate she is to be able to do what she loves and to have the support of a loyal customer base before her shop even opened. A former financial sector worker, Mims had been a home baker. Inspired by fanciful bakers on television, she used vacation time to learn techniques in baking classes in Florida and elsewhere. After her beautifully decorated Oreo cookies were discovered on Instagram, her home-based baking business began. Now with the bake shop, she’s hoping to bring her uniquely beautiful sweets to the rest of St. Louis.
And beautiful is the word to describe these scrumptious morsels. Mims’ fondant skills are top tier, making her cakes sleek, elegant show-stoppers. Her hand dipped cookies, berries and cake pops often sport glittering gold and silver coats. Hand-tied bows adorn her sparkling candied apples. These are glam sweets. But then the shop motto is, “Kiss boring desserts goodbye.” There’s nothing boring about Sweetfixx.
Once Mims had made the decision to open a brick-and-mortar shop, the empty storefront across the street from Urban Chestnut Brewery seemed ideal. The building was an empty brick box with a concrete floor—a blank slate for this artistic baker to make her own. After seven months of renovations, the charming little shop is sleek, elegant, and reflects Mims’ sophisticated style. There’s also a large kitchen where she bakes everything daily. Sweetfixx is open Wednesday – Thursday from noon to 5:00 p.m., Friday – Saturday from noon to 6:00 p.m. and Sundays noon to 4:00 p.m. They’re closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
Mims will be the first to tell you she couldn’t do it all alone. She has a staff of two who are key to her operation. Her sister Letitia Mims-Andrews helps with the baking, and her mother can often be found working in the front of the shop. Even in the bigger space, this family operated business is as busy as ever, with the wait for custom orders taking weeks, even months. So, if you want one of Sweetfixx’s sleekly beautiful creations for your party or event, get your order in early. These luxe desserts are in demand.
